4 Things That Might Surprise You About Moving to New Glasgow

The beautiful riverside town of New Glasgow stands out in many ways. Founded in 1784 by Scottish settlers, it was once an industrial town and the hub of the Northeastern shore. Today, it’s the fourth largest town in Nova Scotia and while it may be small, it is mighty!

Here are 4 things that might surprise you about moving to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia!

Affordable Housing
Housing costs have continued to rise across Canada and Nova Scotia has been no exception. However, New Glasgow still offers affordable housing options for those who are looking for detached, single-family homes. In the last 12 months, the average selling price was just over $298,000 with an average price per square foot of $167*. But what does that get you? Most of these homes have 3 bedrooms and 1-2 baths, with an average square footage of 1,500sf. If you’re looking for an affordable option for buying a family home, New Glasgow just might be it!

Great Food and Famous Pizza
For a town with barely 10,000 people (around 34,000 if you include the surrounding area), you might think the food scene is rather basic, but you’d be mistaken! New Glasgow offers a surprising selection of food options from Indian, Korean, Mexican, Syrian, and more. One of our favorites is the Pictou Lunch Box offering authentic Korean food to go. We recommend trying a cheesy bulgogi wrap for lunch, or grab a Musubi or Kimbap for a quick, on-the-go snack.

But what makes New Glasgow’s food scene really stand out is their pizza. You can ask folks all around Nova Scotia and you’ll be sure to hear stories about their special brown sauce. This unique family recipe is a closely guarded secret (we know they add flour and chicken broth) created more than 60 years ago and it’s so famous, you can now buy it in grocery stores or have a frozen pizza shipped to you across Canada.

Businesses Close Early
New Glasgow embraces a quieter, slow-paced lifestyle and with that comes earlier business hours for many
restaurants and bars. While there are options for those who like to enjoy the nightlife (you can find some bars open until midnight), it is not uncommon for restaurants and other businesses to close earlier in the evening. Mondays can be particularly tough for eating out as most restaurants will close up shop for the day.

Vibrant Music and Arts Scene
Don’t let the laid-back atmosphere of New Glasgow fool you; there’s a vibrant music and arts scene here. New Glasgow offers many events and festivals for all types of lifestyles, but one that stands out is the signature Jubilee, an annual three-day event featuring the best in Canadian and East Coast music. Running for over 20 years and with over 300 unique performers, the Jubilee has been host to East Coast Music Association, Music Nova Scotia, and Juno Award winners and nominees.

New Glasgow is a “small town with BIG talent” and regularly supports and plays host to programs, festivals and events that highlight art and culture from music to theatre, film to photography, dancing, painting, and more.
